I began to develop myself as someone who could bring concepts to reality through a furniture design internship with Summer Classics.

There, I developed several collections, from which these are two examples of my work—one line focused on heavier, sleek, resin and extruded aluminum furniture;

I developed my concepts from trends and what our consumer research showed our buyers wanted in their furniture.

I applied my trend awareness to a 3-week open project, where I chose to focus on sensors.

Sensors no longer just check your heart rate; hundreds are coming out to address health issues that maybe someone you know has, like Alzheimer's, seizures, diabetes.

But even though these sensors could save lives, they’re being put into products that people don't really want to wear. So when I looked at what people DO want in their biotech,

I found they wanted something more fashionable, that let them hide that they had a health problem,

That gave the ability to choose their health sensor and then several others that maybe sensed their emotions and changed their music for them,

So I developed a platform for sensors that let users insert multiple sensors, a platform which now has a provisional utility patent, and used flexible circuit boards, FOLED screens, etc.

I then began developing ways to change out covers and clasps, to match different users' emotional needs,

So with this concept, for example, a diabetic user could insert their health sensor, insert other sensors,

And customize it to help them want to wear the sensors that could save their lives, because they connect with it because they made it theirs.

I further developed my fluency with technology in a project where I looked to shift diagnostics from the hospital to the home.

I did this because I found that nurses are vastly overbooked, so patients do not always get the care they need.

And while blood tests are currently the most effective method of diagnosis, lab tests require $40,000 equipment and tests can cost up to $8000, and tests take a while and often miss problems because they look for a limited scope.

I found people wanted something slightly medical looking, with a touch screen, that let people check their results with a medical professional.

As well as through talking to people who could use a device like this to manage ongoing health issues, to find out what people really wanted.

By talking to experts in the field, I refined how the internal components fit into this product, and used models to test the form for usability.

And the result was a product that, during user testing, generated the response of, “this product is perfect for me.”

It’s not just a form, product that uses inexpensive, cutting-edge technology to bring laboratory-level diagnostics to the home at a fraction of the price, free up hospital staff, save hospitals up to 15 mil over 5 years by outsourcing lab services.
